Doubles GT 2007

A Doubles Warhammer Fantasy Event for Brisbane, Sunday September 30th 2007

What follows below are the tournament rules for the Doubles GT. In the interests of fairness, and open competition, I have endeavoured to make the scoring system as transparent as possible. To use a common wargaming phrase, "what you see is what you get!'' The rules should cover most eventualities, however in the event of an issue arising that is not covered by this document, the decision of the tournament convener, Geoff Tewierik is final.

The Entry form for Doubles GT has all the relevant details regarding venue, costs and requirements of doubles wishing to enter the event.

THE AIM

The overall objectives of the Doubles GT is to promote the game of Warhammer Fantasy Battles (WFB) in Brisbane, bring new players into the tournament community and to have fun. Doubles GT has the support of the Queensland Gamers Guild, Warpuppy and Games Workshop. Doubles GT uses the rules outlined below.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP

The tournament will consist of three games in one day on Sunday September 30th 2007 following the 7th edition rules of Warhammer.

A partnership of two players combine separate, legal, allied 1250pt armies to make one 2500pt army which they then play against another army led by another doubles partnership. The two players that make up a Double can be made up of players from your club, the shop you game at, or just a mate who plays. At the end of the round, the Doubles battle score will determine which team they will face in the next round.

The time breakdown for the day is as follows:

Players will be asked to score the opposing Doubles in both Sportsmanship and Composition i.e. Gamesmanship at the end of each game. These scores will go towards the final overall score to determine the best Doubles.

There will also be an Appearance component judged by the Tournament Organiser

The categories used to determine the overall champion Doubles will be:

The methods used to score each of these categories will be addressed in detail below.

PRIZE CATEGORIES

There will be trophies awarded in the following categories:

The aim is to make 1st - 3rd position trophies available in the overall category.

REQUIREMENTS

7th Edition Warhammer will be played at the Doubles GT

Armies used at Doubles GT must use figures representative of the troops in their army list, and must be fully painted. "What You See is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) will be enforced - players using unrepresentative figures will not be able to use the miniature, or will be required to use it in accordance with the figure type and equipment represented. If players have any doubts, they should seek guidance from the organiser prior to fielding the miniature(s) in question.

Nominated armies must be drawn from the latest GW published WFB Army Books, or published either in Ravening Hordes, the Warhammer Chronicles, or "GW official lists" published as Australian White Dwarf articles released before Friday the 7th of September 2007. In all instances, the latest published lists and rule clarifications shall be deemed to be the only such applicable.

Due to the fact that they are not available to all armies, armies from the 'Back of the Book' alternate lists and special characters will not be permitted.

Each player should have an army of 1250pts or less. Combining this with their partner means that they can field a combined 2500pt list. Army lists must be submitted by Friday the 28th of September 2006. Please ensure your army list is legible and legal. Failure to have a legal list submitted by the due date will incur penalties. Army lists can be submitted via email to geofft at progen-pharma.com (MS Word, Excel or Army Builder text (no html) files please) or via hard copy with your entry. Remember the whole Doubles partnership entry must come in at the one time.

Allied Armies

Each army is listed along with the armies they can ally with:

Special Rules for the Doubles regarding the Armies

There's a few simple rules that have been implemented to make the games easier:

  1. Because two 1250pt lists are allied as one 2500pt army, only 2 base Power dice are generated for the Magic phase. Same goes for Dispel dice. Any mages from both armies can use the pooled dice, but the pooled dice can only be used once per magic phase. I.e. once the two pooled dice are used, that's it until the next magic phase.
  2. Each 1250pt army must designate which model is the general of their army as per normal rules. The model with the highest leadership value will then be the general for the combined 2500pt army. If there are equal leadership values for the two 1250pt armies, then the doubles partnership must designate who the general of the combined army is prior to the event starting. Armies which take crumble tests will do so if the general of their 1250pt army dies, even if that model is not the general of the combined 2500pt army.
  3. The effects of a Battle Standard Bearer (BSB) i.e. Reroll Break Tests or minimise crumbling by 1 model can be used by all models in the 2500pt army no matter which 1250pt army has the BSB. If there are two BSB's then one must be nominated at the start of the evenrt as being the 2500pt armies BSB.
  4. Lustria Lizardmen & Skaven as well as Kislev can be taken as normal army lists that follow their respective lists normal allies (Kislev follow Empire allies)

Players are requested to bring their own pen/pencil, tape or other measuring device, sufficient dice, a legible copy of their army list, and copies of the reference materials used to design the army list (eg. WFB Rulebook, WFB Army book, Warhammer Annual/Chronicles, WD articles etc).

GAMES

Games will consist of 6 turns, or as many as can be completed within 2.5 hours. We shall be taking a 30 minute break between the completion of each round and the commencement of the next round.

The timings for games will be strictly adhered to. Players will be given 30 minute and 10 minute "warnings" prior to the end of the game. At the 10 minute point, if players are not finished their game already, it is recommended they finish the turn they are on, and end the game at that point. Games will not be allowed to extend into the break. Players deemed to be deliberately delaying so as not to finish the full 6 turn game will be warned once only by the convenor, and will then forfeit any subsequent games where they are deemed to be delaying. Any Doubles partnership noted as completing less than five turns consistently in their games will be first warned and then disqualified.

All games will use the Pitched Battle scenario, played on an 8ft x 4ft table

Terrain set-up

The terrain system employed for Team GT has been borrowed from the Vagabonds boys who run Convic.

No more than 8 terrain features will be present for each table.

At the beginning of each game, before you roll for sides, each doubles pairing can nominate a terrain piece that they can place. Roll a D6. The winners can chose whether they want to pick their piece first or second.

Then place the rest of the terrain on the table roughly placed in the centre of the table. Doubles pairings will take it in turn to nominate a piece of terrain and roll 6 d6 and the scatter dice. The terrain piece will move the randomised distance in inches in the direction of the arrow (remember the hit marker has an arrow, a hit does not indicate that the feature stays where it is).

Move the appropriate distance in the right direction, if you hit the table edge or another terrain piece you bounce off it with the remaining distance. This should alleviate the possibility for most of the terrain to end in the back of the deployment zones and also spreads things out in the event that terrain keeps scattering in the same direction.

Once the terrain has been placed it should then be faced in a random direction using the scatter dice which is to be rolled again.

After all the terrain has scattered, the doubles pairings can now place their terrain piece. The doubles pairing who got second choice of terrain piece can chose to place their terrain piece first or second.

Once all the terrain has been placed then rolls for sides.

THE DRAW

Doubles GT will use the "Swiss Chess" system to determine the draw. This will be based upon battle scores alone. The first round will be drawn randomly. From the second round onwards the draw will be seeded based on the cumulative Battle points score.

Under no circumstances will you play the same Doubles partnership more than once.

CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING THE CATEGORIES

GENERALSHIP

Generalship (game results) will be worth 60 points of the overall score.

After each game, tally up victory points as normal for a pitched battle scenario (units destroyed, table quarters, captured standards, etc). Determine the number of battle points you score by comparing the margin of victory against the following table:

Victory Point MarginBattle Points
 WinnerLoser
1/2-200119
201-400128
401-600137
601-800146
801-1000155
1001-1250164
1251-1500173
1501-1750182
1751-2000191
2001+200

You will be given a results card to fill in after each game. Please note that it is the battle points from the table above you need to record here, not the victory point margin. Please ensure that the card is filled out correctly and that both Doubles have signed off on the results.

GAMESMANSHIP:

Comes in two parts: 1 is Sportsmanship and 2 is the Composition of the Army and is worth 30 points overall.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Your Doubles sportsmanship score will be worth up to 15 points of the total score. At the end of each game you will be asked to score your opponents against the following criteria:

The Overall sportsmanship scores will be based upon how many points the Doubles partnership received from opponents, with 5 points awarded for each time the Doubles are rated as one of their opponent's best sports. Doubles partnerships will therefore receive a total of between 0 (for not being selected by any opponents) to 15 sportsmanship points (five points each from all three opponents).

COMPOSITION

The Doubles composition will be worth 15 points of the total score. Player Judged Composition will be based entirely on your opponent's subjective opinion on the fairness, character and thematic suitability of the combined 2500pt army. If it is deemed by your opponent that you have "cheesed out" and aimed to produce an army that is designed only with winning in mind, with no consideration for your opponent's enjoyment or of the army list's thematic background, then they will be expected to mark you poorly. If they deem that the Doubles partnership have followed the background of the army and put together a reasonable army list, they will be expected to score you highly.

At the end of each game you will be asked to compare the army you have just faced to the following criteria:

The Doubles overall composition scores will be based upon how many points you received from opponents, with 5 points awarded for each time you are rated as one of your opponent's best sports. Doubles will therefore receive a total of between 0 (for not being selected by any opponents) to 15 sportsmanship points (five points each from all three opponents).

APPEARANCE

Army Appearance will be worth 15 points of the total score. The appearance category used to be called the "best painted" category, but has been re-named to better represent the other components that go into the category. These include (but are not limited to) painting, modelling, conversions, basing, colour scheme selection and other components. Appearance will consist of two elements - An organiser judged 'checklist' component 10 points and the player judged 'player's choice' 5 points.

The checklist score is a set of questions that will determine your basic painting score. The checklist will give you a potential 10 points, with the remaining 5 points coming from results in the 'players choice' player judged component. The criteria for the checklist scoring is as follows:

The player judged 'player's choice' will be run as follows; During the day the doubles partnership will be asked to check out the other armies throughout the tournament and confer with each other as to which Doubles Army deserve votes. Doubles will be given a card to record their favourite 3 armies. Once all Doubles have voted by the start of game 3, the scores will be tallied. For each 1st place vote a double receives they will get 3 beauty pageant points, 2nd place gives 2 points, 3rd place 1 point. Votes will be added up and the Double with the highest beauty pageant score will be determined the 'player's choice'. This judging also contributes to the overall best appearance component. The highest total of the beauty pageant will receive the full 5 tournament points with remaining place getters receiving a score proportionate to the winning total (rounding to the nearest 0.5pts). So if the winner of the Players Choice scores 30 votes and you're lucky enough to score 15 votes (or 50% of his result), you will get a bonus 2.5 points towards your appearance score (ie. 50% of his full 5 marks).

TIE BREAKERS

In the event that two Doubles are tied in scores for the overall category, secondary and tertiary categories will be used as a fall back to determine the winner:
