THE GT 2008

A Warhammer Fantasy Event for Brisbane

What follows below are the tournament rules for The GT 2008. In the interests of fairness, and open competition, I have endeavoured to make the scoring system as transparent as possible. To use a common war gaming phrase; "what you see is what you get!'' The rules should cover most eventualities, however in the event of an issue arising that is not covered by this document, the decision of the tournament convener, Geoff Tewierik is final.

THE AIM

The overall objectives of The GT 2008 are to promote the game of Warhammer Fantasy Battles (WFB) in Brisbane, provide the opportunity for bigger than normal games and to have fun. The GT 2008 is registered as an Indy GT, all results from the event will be passed onto Andrew Galea for inclusion into the Warhammer Fantasy Rankings

GT uses the rules outlined below:

THE CHAMPIONSHIP

The tournament will consist of seven games, across three days:

Saturday 3rd of May

Sunday 4th of May

Monday 5th of May

The categories used to determine the overall champion will be:

The methods used to score each of these categories will be addressed in detail below.

PRIZE CATEGORIES

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

The aim is to make 1st, 2nd and 3rd position prizes available in the overall category, and first place in the individual component categories. Each player will be eligible for a single 'major' prize only (i.e., from the categories listed above).

REQUIREMENTS

Armies used at The GT 2008 must use figures representative of the troops in their army list, and must be fully painted. "What You See is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) will be enforced. Players using unrepresentative figures will not be able to use the miniature, or will be required to use it in accordance with the figure type and equipment represented. If players have any doubts, they should seek guidance from the organiser prior to fielding the miniature(s) in question.

Nominated armies must be drawn from the latest Games Workshop published WFB Army Books, or in the case of Dogs of War and Chaos Dwarfs use the lists on the GW website as they've had minor updates. In all instances, the latest published lists and rule clarifications shall be deemed to be the only such applicable and these must be released by the event cut off date of Friday the 25th of April 2008. Due to the fact that they are not available to all armies, armies from the 'Back of the Book' alternate lists and special/named characters will not be permitted. No Storm of Chaos lists for Dwarfs, Empire, Orcs & Goblins, High Elves, Vampire Counts are allowed as they've all had new books since SoC was released, everything else from the SoC Army Book is ok.

The new Daemon book is due out at the end of April, start of May. If it is released in GW stores before the cut off date it will be used for the tournament, if it is not released by the cut off date then the currently available rules, Hordes of Chaos Daemons or Storm of Chaos Daemonic Legion, will still be used.

Armies should be of 3000 points or less.

In past events players who spent a lot of points on Magic (i.e. mages, levels, bound spells and items) did not do well in the event overall compared to those that distributed their points more evenly. So here's a tip - don't overdose on magic and you should do well.

Army Lists

Army lists must be submitted by Friday the 25th of April 2008 at the latest. Please ensure your army list is legible and legal. Army lists can be submitted via email to the Tournament Organiser on geoff_tewierik "at" hotmail.com. Players are requested to bring their own pen/pencil, tape or other measuring device, sufficient dice, a legible copy of their army list, and copies of the reference materials used to design the army list (eg. WFB Rulebook, WFB Army book etc).

Entry Forms

I require entry forms to be filled in and payments to be made by Friday the 25th of April. Entry form is available for download from here. Cost for the event is $45 per player ($40 for QGG Inc members). Payment can be made via cheque, money order or direct deposit. Contact me via email on geoff_tewierik "at" hotmail.com for direct deposit details. All entry forms/money/army lists can be sent together if you wish to: Geoff Tewierik, 22 Cradock Street, Holland Park QLD 4121.

GAMES

Games will consist of 6 turns, or as many as can be completed within 3 hours. We shall be taking a break between the completion of each round and the commencement of the next round. The timings for games will be strictly adhered to. Players will be given 30 minute and 10 minute "warnings" prior to the end of the game. At the 10 minute point, if players are not finished their game already, it is recommended they finish the turn they are on, and end the game at that point. Games will not be allowed to extend into the break. Players deemed to be deliberately delaying so as not to finish the full 6 turn game will be warned once only by the convenor, and will then forfeit any subsequent games where they are deemed to be delaying. Any player noted as completing less than five turns consistently in their games will be first warned and then disqualified.

All games will use the old style "Pitched Battle". The rules to be used are those of the current (7th) edition of WFB.

THE DRAW

The GT 2008 will use the "Swiss Chess" system to determine the draw. The first round will be drawn randomly, grudge matches are allowed so long as both players involved in the grudge contact the organiser prior to the event starting. From the second round onwards the draw will be seeded (i.e. you will be paired with an opponent who is on a comparable battle score).Under no circumstances will you play the same player more than once.

CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING THE CATEGORIES

Note: End of game scoring of Sportsmanship & Composition as well as the Beauty Pageant voting is considered by the TO to be confidential information and should be treated by all players as such. Players found breaching the confidentiality of this information will be asked to leave the tournament.

GENERALSHIP

Generalship (game results) will determine the "best general" category and will also be worth 140 points of the overall score.

After each game, tally up victory points as normal for a pitched battle scenario (units destroyed, table quarters, captured standards, etc). Determine the number of battle points you score by comparing the margin of victory against the following table:

Victory Point MarginBattle Points
 WinnerLoser
1/2-300119
301-600128
601-900137
901-1200146
1201-1500155
1501-1800164
1801-2100173
2101-2400182
2401-2700191
2701-3000+200

You will be given a results card to fill for the whole tournament. Please note that it is the battle points from the table above you need to record here, not the victory point margin. Please ensure that the card is filled out correctly and that both players have signed off on the results and then bring it to the organiser's desk.

GAMESMANSHIP:

Comes in two parts: 1 is Sportsmanship and 2 is the Composition of the Army and is worth 84 points overall.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Sportsmanship will go towards determining the "Best Gamesman" category and also be worth 42 points of the total score. At the end of each game you will be asked to score your opponent against the following criteria:

Players will therefore receive a total of between 0 (for not being given any points by any of your opponents) to 35 sportsmanship points (five points each from all seven opponents). At the end of the event you will be asked to nominate from the seven opponents you faced, one player who stood above all the others when it came to Sporting behaviour. Each player that is nominated will receive an extra point, with 7 possible points available.

COMPOSITION

Composition will contribute to the "Best Gamesman" category, and also be worth 42 points of the total score. Player Judged Composition will be based entirely on your opponent's subjective opinion on the fairness, character and thematic suitability of your army. If it is deemed by your opponent that you have "cheesed out" and aimed to produce an army that is designed only with winning in mind, with no consideration for your opponent's enjoyment or of the army list's thematic background, then he will be expected to mark you poorly. If he deems that you have followed the background of your army list and put together a reasonable army list, he will be expected to score you highly.

NOTE: As these games are at 3000pts an average army suitable for this event is expected to have 1 BIG flying/terror causing model and another BIG Lord (be it a mage or fighting character) as well as a few more models on the table than what would normally be seen at tournaments. Taking two magic users with 3 or more levels of magic is frowned upon and comp scores should reflect this.

At the end of each game you will be asked to compare the army you have just faced to the following criteria:

Players will therefore receive a total of between 0 (for not being given any points by any of your opponents) to 35 composition points (five points each from all seven opponents). At the end of the event you will be asked to nominate from the seven armies you faced, one army which stood above all the others when it came to being well composed and suitable for the event. Each army that is nominated will receive an extra point, with 7 possible points available.

APPEARANCE:

Army Appearance will contribute to the "Best Army" category (a combination of Painting and Comp scores), and will also be worth 25 points of the total score. The appearance category includes (but are not limited to) painting, modelling, conversions, basing, colour scheme selection and other components. Appearance will consist of two elements - An organiser judged 'checklist' component worth 25 points and the Players Choice voting.

The checklist score is a set of questions that will determine your basic painting score. The checklist will give you a potential 25 points. The criteria for the checklist scoring are as follows:

Judges may at their discretion award half points for any of the above questions if they feel the player has almost achieved the objective. (eg, most of the army has highlighting and shading, but there are still some models that are just base coated). Once your army has been judge according to the above criteria, you will be informed as to what score you have received and why, you will also then be asked to sign off on the score given as being acceptable. This allows you the chance to respond to the mark you have been given, and is in place to enable greater transparency in the scoring process.

Players Choice

The Players Choice Beauty Pageant will be run as follows. At the end of the lunch break period on day one your table assignments will be posted and you should proceed to your table as normal but do not start deploying. Instead you should lay out your army for presentation and place the slip of paper you will be supplied with, indicating the player's name and what type of army it is. Once all armies have been deployed in this manner players will be given a card to record their favourite 3 armies. Once all players have voted, the scores will be tallied. For each 1st place vote a player receives he will get 3, 2nd place gives 2 points and 3rd place 1 point. Votes will be added up. The highest total of the beauty pageant will receive the award for Players Choice as voted by their peers.

Players who did not paint their own army are ineligible for votes in the beauty pageant and may not win the "Players Choice" award.

TIE BREAKERS:

In the event that two players are tied in scores for a particular award category, secondary and tertiary categories will be used as a fall back to determine the winner:
